Scratch Workshop
Aug 25, 2010
I Attended an Imagine, Program, Share: Library Programming with SCRATCH workshop when an opportunity arises! I guarantee the three hours will fly by and fun will be had by all. The interactive, hands-on, SCRATCH workshop was presented by the excellent instructors, Keith Braafladt and Jennifer Nelson, at Southwest Minnesota State University’s library. The SCRATCH software was created for 8-16 years old as a means of education into the world of programming – but the kids do not always realize that they are using math, English, and creativity while having a great time...
Scratch Traing 2010!
Aug 25, 2010
I attended the "Scratch" workshop in Marshall. What a wonderful time we had! It almost felt like we were playing and not working. This is a great program. I especially liked the way it was taught to us. Learn by doing. We are planning on doing workshops in Ortonville and Graceville for our tweens and teens. I think they will certainly enjoy doing this and creating their own clips. The program is so easy to work with. All is color coordinated, no codes just click on colors to add, delete, alter, etc. This program can be used by...
Opposite Gender Staffing
Jul 21, 2010
After seven years of working with teen girls, I'm finding myself facing a brand new learning curve as my position of Teen Services Librarian has me working closely with adolescent boys for the first time in my life. That's why I was excited to see that Amicus was offering training for "opposite gender staffing"--women who work with boys, and men who work with girls.
The training was held in a "circle" format, with an emphasis on those who were practicing in the field being the "experts." We were able to share our concerns, challenges, and successes with one another, which made each...
2010 Children's Literature Workshop was wonderful!
Jul 21, 2010
The 2010 Children's Literature Workshop was wonderful! Will Hobbs and Derek Anderson were the guest author/illustrators and the workshop closed with "The Magic of Reading" by Curtis Hed.
Will Hobbs is an adventurer, hence his books are full of adventure. He gets half of his book ideas from experience and half from reading. Hobbs says the secret of writing is to "show it, don't tell it." He says you need to use all 5 senses to grab the reader's attention in the first 10 pages of the book. Hobbs declares...
Children’s Literature workshop
Jul 21, 2010
I spent two days with people who love to read, write, illustrate and talk about books! What could possibly be more fun?
The workshop started with author Will Hobbs. He writes novels about adventure that readers will have a hard time putting down. His writing uses all five senses enabling a reader to see what is happening instead of being told what is happening. He says the brain will remember what the heart cares about.
Susan Carr Brown talked to us about the best children's books for 2009-10. She had a five-page handout that listed...
