AASL 15th Nation Conference: Turning the Page by Lauri Fox/Tracy Area Schools

Too many choices . . . not enough time! But I am so thankful that I was able to attend the National Conference of the American Association Of School Librarians.

The conference began with a thought provoking presentation by Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows : What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains. The neurology of our brains are being impacted by technology - the distractions and interruptions of cell phones, email, tweets, etc, effect our thought processes, and our comprehension and retention - our ability to think deeply.

One of the breakout sessions I attended was a "theme" structured book talk titled "Your Invited : a Feast of New Literature for Teens." The presenters did a great job of "selling" a variety of new books at the teen and YA interest and content level. Most of them have been added to our collection and have good circulation. Another session I thought was very helpful was, "Thinking Outside the Book : Practical Strategies That Engage Boys In Reading" presented by Pat Miller. She shared many ideas that she implemented in her media program prior to retiring. The term "indifferent reader" was something I had not heard before, but instantly recognized some students who could be characterized as such. Her mantra was "Know what books boys like, and let them read them." (Even the ones that may be considered "marginal titles.) She had many suggested topics, and even some specific series titles; as well as programming ideas to incorporate with the goal of high participation by all students, but especially boys. I also attended a session titled "Reading 2.0 : Integrating Technology Into Reading Instruction." The presenter talked about many options - most free - that could be incorporated into reading instruction and improve students' reading speed, fluency and comprehension in ways that appeal to our learners.
Attending this conference was very exciting and helpful - the variety and range of sessions, speakers, and opportunities to network with other media specialists from around the nation was outstanding.

Thank you, SAMMIE for this experience!  Lauri Fox/Tracy Area Schools
